Understanding Semiotics

The objectives of this lesson was to improve on the analysis of media texts by applying media theory.

The media theory we learnt this lesson was semiotics, it is the study of signs, indicators, likeness, metaphors, symbolism, communication, and iconography the things we use to bring meaning into the world around us.

This can be anything that represents or indicates something else, in semiotic analysis we call these 'objects'. Sometimes semiotics doesn't just mean pictures, it can also be physical feelings or sounds.

There are three types of semiotic objects: Icon which directly resembles the object. Index is the sign that has an implied logical association with the object. Symbol is a sign that is not inherently connected to the object. The connection between the two is a conventional one particular to a culture or society that is taught.

Gone Too Far

This film follows two different teenage brother that meet for the first time, this is shown over the course of a single day. They stuggle to accept each other for who they are and how different they are to each other. Yemis exitment to meet his brother soon changes once he sees his brother Ikudayisi's arraival from Nigeria wearing socks and sandals.

As Yemi is a young teenager living in Peckham, South London with mum and his older brother, Iku did not emigrate with them and grew up in Nigeria, the brother seem to have different views in things. As they grew up in different places they do not seem to share anything in common, because of this it takes time for them to connect.

From this movie I understood that how the place you grow up in can change the way you view different type of things, how you approach situations, how you talk, how you dress and etc. All this ellements can change in life, just depending in the location/environment you live in. This is what makes every person unique, it helps them grow into the person they are or even influence you to become someone different.

John Williams is an American composer and conductor. He has been in this career for several decades, and he has composed some of the most popular songs for films. A few of the movies he has composed for are Harry Potter and Star Wars and most of the melodies from Scindler's List to Saving Private Rayan. He's the most Oscar-nominated person alive.
The

Star Wars franchise wraps you up in every hostile and romantic turn from
intergalactic battles to star-crossed lovers. The main title fanfare instantly immerses the audience. He excels at emotional depth, his pieces like Across the stars and Dual of the Fates showcase his ability to mix grandeur with deep storytelling.

The use of leitmotifs which he borrowed from classical composers like Wagner gives star wars a unique musical identity. We can see his composition retaining this magic throughout the sequel, proving his timeless impact on film music.
